It was late and dark on the shores of Scott's Flat Lake, most people had gone back to their cabins to go to bed... and those that hadn't had drifted into the shadows of the night to go do whatever it was that they did that could only be done at night to avoid getting caught breaking the rules. There was one, though, that had done neither. Elizabeth Rae Cooper, one of the new kids around camp. She was a quiet girl most of the time, and could easily come off as shy. Performing in front of people was certainly not her strong suite, though it had been said that she had the voice of an angel. She didn't believe it... the only one in her family who had the voice of an angel was her sister... and she literally was an angel now.
Ellie had tried to sleep tonight, believe me she had, but every time she closed her eyes all she could think of was her sister. Her mind was tossing and turning like a pair of socks in a dryer. After having laid in bed for several hours trying to sleep with no such luck, she wandered out of the cabin she had been assigned to, and ambled around aimlessly. When she didn't have anywhere else to go outside in the cool crisp night air, she headed up back to the buildings that made up John Williams Music Camp. She didn't really know where she was going, and she definitely wasn't planning on ending up where she did, but life sometimes had a way of directing people to where they needed to be.
It wasn't long before Ellie found herself standing on the stage, just thinking about everything that had happened lately. A few minutes passed of just standing there before she decided that the only way she was going to put her mind to rest was through music. She didn't really want to play the piano, since it was kind of loud, so she picked up one of the spare guitars the camp had should someone need it. She didn't really know a lot of guitar, but she knew enough to play the simple notes needed for the song she had in mind. It was one that her sister had always loved and had taught her how to play on the guitar. She knew the words and the notes by heart now, she had played it so many times since the untimely murder.
Situating herself on the edge of the stage, sitting comfortably with her legs over the edge of it, she carefully and softly started running her fingers over the strings and producing the desired sound, and after a few moments, closed her eyes and softly started singing the lyrics to the song. The longer she played, the more she got into the song, and without realizing it, by the time she hit the chorus the second time, she had reached that perfect acoustic performance level of volume. Whenever someone was listening to her, that she knew of, she was always much too quiet and was drowned out by whatever instrument she was playing... but when she was alone, she wasn't afraid, and that was when that "voice of an angel" came out.
Perhaps someday the 17 year old would conqueror that fear of criticism and break out of her shell... but for now, the only time she could life her voice to be loud enough was when she thought no one was listening. After the song ended, she kept her eyes closed for a while, really missing her sister now. It wasn't fair that she was taken so soon and in the manner that she was. She deserved better than that. Ellie was completely oblivious at that point to the fact that she wasn't as alone as she had thought... and perhaps that was a good thing.
