Jamie shook off the thought, and continued to try to read the music. He started again until he went a whole section before he started screwing up at the sixteenth notes. It seemed that his cello was haunting him more than ever. The fifteen-year-old boy wasn’t getting any better at the cello (or so he thought.) It troubled him how others were flying by, and a simple vibrato was making him loose sleep.
Just forget about it, Jamie!
You don’t understand, Louis! You always think that you know what you’re saying.
Louis was the one that made him keep practicing, and without the pessimist’s negative comments, he would be either farther behind, or advancing quickly.
He was carrying his cello in its case, and Jamie set it down carefully on the stage. There was already a chair out, and he took advantage of the situation. Finding a comfortable spot, he began to take out the string instrument. The dark brown wood was comforting to him. Jamie didn’t care that he usually practiced somewhere else, somewhere where nobody would hear him, but he was feeling a bit spontaneous today.
It was well after noon, but the sun wasn’t beginning to set yet, and it was perfect for a little practicing. Jamie adjusted the cello, and sat down in the seat. Placing the cello between his legs, Jamie reached for the already rosined bow. He made sure he didn’t need to do anything extra once he got on the stage. His stand was in front of him, and some sheet music was resting on it.
Jamie then started to tune, the one thing that he had picked up instantly. The bow glided over the strings, and a nasty sound came from his lowest one. “Ew… flat,” he muttered about his C string. Then the process of fixing the others started. It took a good ten minutes; Jamie doesn’t really keep his cello in a temperature-controlled area. But he took care of the instrument, nonetheless.
After he was done with the tuning, Jamie shifted through the sheet music to a slightly simple song; not hard, but not terribly easy either. He started it well, but then the small print made his head spin. It wasn’t as if he was sight reading, and when he was, it was twenty times worse.
Gah! At this rate…
Count, Jamie, count. Y’know… Sesame Street?
When did you get back?
When I saw that you were forgetting something stupid.
Does this mean you’re actually helping?
… yes.
Jamie was delighted by this fact, and a smile was stamped onto his face. When Louis started caring, it meant the world to him, so Jamie tried his best to get the sixteenth notes right. And that meant whispers of "one e and a two e and a..." were abundant. The stage quickly filled with his voice, counting out the messy rhythm.
As the day progressed, Jamie got more familiar with the music and the melody, and the task of learning the piece wasn't as big as he thought.
Now, to work on that super simple vibrato. [/blockquote][/blockquote]
