the heat from the blazing sun pounded on the music camp making life in the cabins almost unbearable. now, matilda dobson had her fair share of warm weather every summer but the Oregon native was new to the Nevada heat. all she could do was pray that the rest of her stay at camp wouldn't be this hot as she was getting dressed for the day. however, all the other girls in tilly's cabin didn't seem to have the same shocked expression on their faces when they woke up and were going around the business just like any other day. so tilly just put her fake smile on, dressed lightly, and continued on like everyone else.
walking to the cafeteria for breakfast was an accomplishment in itself. the air was just so... dry and over bearing. matilda felt like an itchy wool sweater was covering her face, which was like deja vu of visits to older relatives houses that she'd rather not relive. clearly, the oxygen in Nevada was different then its friend Oregon who was only two doors down because this air was not normal. good thing she was rewarded with a good plate of pancakes and air conditioning. tilly ate as slowly as she could to just prolong her time in cafeteria before making her way back to her cabins to get her trumpet. she was planning on practicing, but the weather was demanding for other activities. there was no way on earth that tilly could considerate on her music if she was to worried about actually breathing... with a sigh matilda slid her trumpet case back under her bed in exchange for her suitcase.
quickly she changed into her swimsuit and pulled a small summer dress over it. by the time she had her hair up in a ponytail and sunscreen on it was noon and perfect time for some time at the beach. now, if you know anything about matilda evangiline, you know she can't tan worth squat and her plan wasn't to go down to the shoreline and get that perfect golden skin. in fact, she was hoping that maybe there would be people who hated the heat as much as she did. but when she finally got to the beach she found something much better than that.
it resembled a beach whale, it was the blob, and tilly wasn't sure if she had seen anything as beautiful. in a matter of seconds the teenagers brain played millions of possible scenarios, only helping her urge to gather a bunch of people together. tilly herself had never used a 'blob' but she had seen it tons of times on tv and she wasn't about to let this moment pass her by. hesitantly, the first trooper shuffled to the beach were some kids were waste deep in water and others were building sandcastles with twigs and seashells. "Hey, any of you know how to work that thing?!" she called out, turning and pointing at the blob. All she really needed was one other person, though the more the merrier.* * *
